Happy 116th Birthday, Edith Head: A Google Doodle For A 20th Century (cat lady) Fashionista

Cynthia:  Look what popped up on Google today.

Cynthia:  It’s a Google Doodle celebrating what would have been Hollywood Costume Designer, Edith Head’s, 116th Birthday!

Edith Head won 8 Academy Awards for costume designing. She dressed some of the most famous and elegant movies stars from the 1920’s -1970’s.

Cynthia:  Edith Head was popular among these movie stars because she collaborated with them to make clothes that fit and showcased what was unique about their bodies but not so over the top that they detracted from their performances. She was a true artist in that she made clothes to help tell the story and not to feed her own ego. And oh my gosh they are soooo beautiful!

And ya know what else about, Edith?  She loved her cat!

Cynthia:  Which of course makes us love her even more.

Marcy:  Well of course. Who is this again? Edith Butt?

Cynthia:  Marcy! Edith Head.

Marcy:  Sorry. What? Edith Arm?

Cynthia:  Head.

Marcy:  Foot?

Cynthia:  Oh you think you are so funny.

Marcy purrs smugly.

Cynthia:  Shall we give a toast to Edith?

Marcy:  How about an english muffin?

Cynthia:  Now you are just being silly.

Marcy raises her Friskies can. Cynthia raises her martini glass.

Marcy and Cynthia:  To the First Cat Lady Fashionista of the 20th Century! Happy Birthday, Edith Head!

Wow! I love that you know your fashion, Cynthia! I had never heard of Edith Head. And now, with Marcy's play on words, I will never forget that name! I love all of her gowns. You are so right, they fit each woman and her body type perfectly! My favorite is Grace Kelly's "Rear Window" gown. It is so lovely. Thanks for teaching me something! So cool! Happy Birthday Edith!

      Hi Jenni!
Her body of work is immense. It was difficult picking out just a few photos. She is credited for creating Audrey Hepburn's iconic look. It's also funny to hear her talk about these seemingly perfect actresses bodies as imperfect – "oh – Grace Kelly was too tall and had a short waist and this is how we fixed that with clothes" or -"oh Audrey had such broad shoulders and a too long neck and was straight up and down as a board and this is how we made her look great with clothes" Of course, I am paraphrasing! LOL All of the actresses LOVED working with her!

I like the Grace Kelly Academy Awards dress. The color is incredible. I wish there was a front and back view.
